“Life doesn’t have to be Perfect to be Wonderful” Author, Jodi Samuels

FitLifeSTRONG is a Parent Support Group for Moms, Dads, Caregivers, Guardians and Family Members of children with Special or Extra Needs. Working together with school administrators, teachers and therapists to better support our children within our community is very essential.

My name is Susie Wong-Benjamin, a mother of two boys coming out of the closet as a mom raising a special needs child with my dedicated and devoted husband and father of the boys, Michael Benjamin. We are on a mission to band together with others to obtain resources and gain strength along the way of life’s journey to become FitLifeSTRONG.
Life changes very quickly upon realizing that you have a child with special needs, learning to accept that fact and finding a support system to help you adjust to finding your way.

Prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder
• In 2020, the CDC reported that approximately 1 in 54 children has been identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) according to estimates from CDC’s Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network studies in 2016.
• Boys are more than 4 times more likely to be diagnosed with autism than girls.
• Minority groups tend to be diagnosed later and less often.

Just before the pandemic, friends and I were creating Parent Training workshops at my son’s preschool for many families. Surprisingly, the attendance was not grand but a few teachers were present. Not all families are willing to acknowledge that their child has special needs and a few hope to get their child into a “regular” zoned school in efforts to wipe their record clean.

People may not always have the support of family and it is easy for some people to be in denial as to what their perceived family dream or vision is meant to be. Accepting, respecting and loving your child and providing him/her with all the tools and resources to get ahead is the ultimate goal. During this pandemic, parents became teacher, therapist, cheerleader, chef, accountant, housekeeper and well you get the idea. This experience requires us to be FitLifeSTRONG!

Only the STRONG survive! We need to be mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually strong as we build a supportive and understanding community base.
